Hand-carved in Beaune, France, during the 1700’s, this limestone well head has a fantastic patina from centuries of exposure to the elements. The cream colored stone has traces of moss and lichen, adding to the green, gold, brown, and black speckled patina.
Roughly two inches thick with a minimum interior opening of 27 1/2 inches, the stone once surrounded a well opening on a farm in Beaune. Wells were often capped with a piece of stone, not only to prevent contaminants from entering the water supply, but also to prevent people and animals from inadvertently falling into an open hole. Our versatile 18th century carved limestone wellhead can still be used in this fashion for a farm or ranch. It would also make a unique outdoor planter or center piece in a courtyard.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with wear commensurate to age and exposure to the elements. Acceptable nicks and losses with traces of moss and lichen. The stone was hand-carved, so it is not a perfect circle. At some point the stone most likely had a surround (or was partially buried), as indicated by the “ring” towards the bottom with a lighter patina.
