From roughly the middle to the late 1700s, this domed table top trunk has been constructed from pine and painted in its entirety in black and white. On either side of the trunk are well detailed bronze handles in the shape of a lion’s head. A ring passes through his mouth for the handle. The inside of the box is unpainted and has a lidded valuables box on the upper right hand side.
This beautifully painted 18th Century trunk originated from Western Austria or maybe Northern Italy. Other pine chests found in Austria, Southern Germany, and Switzerland often have polychrome floral motifs. This unique example is painted in an alternating black and white semi circle pattern. It has its working lock and key.
CONDITION: Good condition with wear and rubs to paint and wood, minor areas of discoloration to paint, very minor chips.
