17th Century Tapestry Fragment from Flanders

SKU: 1122-4 Category: Tag:

$1,800.00

Description

This 5 foot tall tapestry fragment is over 350 years old and was woven in one of the many successful tapestry workshops of Flanders, Europe.  These tapestries of present-day Belgium, featured religious, mythological, and historical scenes.  Although this tapestry is considered to be a very old object, it must be noted that tapestry production had already been a trademark of the region for roughly 300 to 400 years prior to this one being woven.  In the tapestry seen here, we can make out two figures, one with a sword in hand, moving amongst a dark green foliate background.  In the foreground, we see a halberd and spear laying among the leaves.  This fragment was originally part of a much larger historical narrative, likely depicting a military event.  Other objects or parts of figures on this tapestry are difficult to make out, only adding to the mystery and allure of such a piece.  A fragment of this size is quite easy to place in any home (H – 60, W – 35 1/2).

CONDITION: Good strong condition, wear commensurate to age including separations and fading.  Was originally part of a much larger piece. Loops woven to backing for quick hanging.
