Pair of Antique French Horse Paintings by Quinton 1851-1921

This pair of gilt framed oil paintings of horses in the field was painted by Clement Quinton (1851-1921). Quinton was born in Paris in 1851 and died in Saint Maur in 1921. He was known for painting genre scenes of animals and their human counterparts, in pastures, fields, or at the barn. He was heavily influenced by Manet, especially with his treatment of light. He exhibited in France where he won many First prizes. Other countries were Sweden, and the USA.

This pair of paintings exhibits his wonderful treatment of light. The first painting has two horses on a dirt road with one being ridden side saddle by a workman. Behind them is another rider on horseback leading another horse back to a farm which is in the distance. There is a stream to the side of the road where three boats are moored. The second painting depicts two horses in a field with a workman in the distance. One of the horses is drinking from a watering hole while the other horse waits for his turn. The painting with four horses is signed on the bottom right, and the painting with two horses is signed on the bottom left.

CONDITION: Very good condition. Minor old restorations to frames including regilding; minor chips; very small restoration and in-painting to canvases.
