Antique Louis XVI Style Giltwood Parcloses Mirror from France, 1800s

This elegant, antique French, giltwood, Louis XVI style mirror is called a Miroir a “Parcloses” .  It has four canted side mirrored panels separated and held in place from the main center mirror by giltwood ornamentation. The unusual arrangement of the separate pieces of silvered glass seen here gives this type of mirror its distinctive name of a "Parcloses". This term refers to the pieces of molding that join the inner and outer frames.  Also, the placement of the silvered mirrors at the top, bottom and both sides that are canted, reflect a different area of the room from that of the larger central silvered glass plate.

The motifs are two putti resting upon the upper molding and holding on to a vine of flowers which flanks either side of them.  The vine is attached to a beribboned open medallion which is at the top center portion of the mirror. A vine of roses hangs from the open center of the medallion with beading around the interior. Delicate openworked motifs are at all inner canted corners of mirror. The outer corners have scrolling acanthus leaves with flowers.  Beading separates the main mirror from the canted sections. The mirrors are all beveled and have the highly desired losses to their silvered backs.

This beautiful antique French giltwood Parcloses mirror will be the focal point of any room.

CONDITION:  Old restorations, minor losses of motifs, cracks and rubs to some motifs, minor losses to gilding. Mirror has minor losses to silvering.
