Antique Giltwood Louis XVI Style Mirror from France, Circa 1870

This magnificent giltwood, Louis XVI Style mirror exemplifies what Louis XVI embraced in ornamentation---neoclassical simplicity.  Straight lines were interrupted by ornament , mediating severity.  There was always a central axis around which motifs of flowers, fruits, animals, trophies and knotted ribbons were placed.  On this mirror, the central motifs are a quiver of arrows and a torch having an eternal flame.  Floral and foliate motifs are interspersed throughout, with a pair of lovebirds depicted beneath.  The entire central motif is tied with a knotted ribbon.  Floral and foliate garlands are draped over the mirror and through Greek Keys flanking the demifigures.  Braziers are atop the two female demi-figures who rest upon volutes.  Beading , guilloches, and egg and dart embellish the straight line moldings below.  The bottom molding is flat, and by design, would rest upon a flat surface, a piece of furniture, or a mantel.

CONDITION:  Old Restorations; minor losses to gilding and motifs, minor cracks, age separations, nicks.
