18th Century French Louis XV Walnut Wood Mantel

This period Louis XV walnut wood mantel dates to the middle of the 18th century. The shaped front silhouette is in the crossbow shape, or known in France an “arbalete”. The top is over a conforming body and has an overhang of an inch on all sides, while the back center has a rectangular cutout for the chimney. There are Louis XV motifs of a central stylized shell and a raffle leaf acanthus on the front. The mantel’s ornamentation has raised frontal panels to either side of the motifs with shaped and elongated C-scrolls at the bottom of the frieze. The canted corners have a rocaille shell near the top with asymmetrical narrow panels beneath. The sides of the fireplace are comprised of both horizontal and vertical panels.

On the carved lintel we can see small circular shapes in several areas. These are very old restorations in which ebenistes would insert small pieces of wood to replace comprised areas such a knot or burl. At nearly 25 inches deep, this mantel is particularly deep and makes quite a statement. The walnut has a warm patina, and it is quite a rare form of fireplace to find on the market today.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with 200 year old restorations as well as more recent repairs. Nicks and minor losses in areas. Small cutout door can be seen on the bottom of one side. Minor age splits.
