Period Louis XV Walnut Wood and Tapestry Firescreen from France

This impressive walnut wood and tapestry firescreen from France dates to circa 1750. Firescreens such as this are used to decorate the opening of the fireplace when not in use.  This one has a wonderful tapestry depicting a dog running after a bird through a mass of leaves with peonies in various phases of bloom.

The hand carved walnut wood surround features a sunflower motif at the center top with acanthus leaves and gadrooned leaves to either side.  The carved and gently shaped sides have scrolling acanthus leaves continuing from each corner with a margent of tiny flowers and leaves extending from them.  The shaped bottom rail is configured with more gadrooned leaves at the center.  On either side of the firescreen are two small vertical legs with shaped foliate sides.  These are on top of shaped pairs of splayed legs and scrolled feet, having motifs of tiny leaves. The back has been covered in a complementary colored material. The hand carving on this firescreen is very detailed but subtle in its overall appearance.  The wood is French walnut and has a warm coloration with waxed finish.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with age separations, minor abrasions to wood, traces of old woodworm, tear to lining on back.
