Pair of 19th Century Bronze Dore Sphinx Chenets from France

From the time of ancient Egypt,Greece and Rome, the sphinx has been depicted in a variety of ways. In the 18th Century, the French portrayed the sphinx with the face of a court beauty, often with their necks lengthened for elegance. Their body was that of a lion. These stunning bronze dore sphinx chenets are from 19th Century France, and are depicted in the same way. They are perched upon scrolls over a base ornamented with acanthus leaves. A center medallion on the front of each base has the faces of a courtly man and a woman upon a rectangular diagonal ground. There are acanthus leaves at all four corners over thick lion’s paw feet. The backs of the chenet bases are hollow.

These antique French bronze dore chenets will highlight your fireplace, but they can also be used as wonderful decorative accessories for any other area.

CONDITION: Very good condition with minor rubs and nicks to bronze, some patination spotting, wear commensurate with use  and age.
