Arms of France, 19th Century Cast Iron Fireback

This late 1800s French iron fireback is in the shape of an arched top with right angles. Beneath the arch is a Royal crown and a shield with the French triple fleur-de-lys surrounded by ribbon tied acanthus leaves. This emblem is what's known as Les Armoiries de la France. The sides are beaded with c-scroll acanthus leaves at the corners, and all this rests upon a rectangular lower piece. Firebacks, invented roughly 500 years ago, have been keeping large rooms warm throughout Europe. They are placed in the back of the fireplace to reflect heat into the room from the burning logs. They are a great way to dress up an otherwise featureless area, and of course, still provide warming to the inside of the home. They are also used as stove backsplashes, and the one below is a good size for such an application.

CONDITION: Very good condition with minor wear to motifs and rusting to iron
