Charming and Unusual Carved Oak 'Lost Fishermen' Chandelier from St. Malo, Brittany

This highly unusual, hand carved oak chandelier has 5 arms consisting of fishermen in boats, holding lanterns in front of them. The chandelier is from the old fishing town of St. Malo in Brittany. There is a folkloric association in St Malo that is dedicated to the memory of the ‘lost fisherman’ (19th Century). Fishing has been written and romanticized about all over Coastal Brittany, and fishing has been an important part of their culture and history for hundreds of years. This chandelier features a stone lighthouse at the center with two windows and a door. Five fishermen are on their stomachs at the front of their boats, holding lanterns to guide them through the night or fog. It can be presumed that they are looking for the lighthouse. The lighthouse holds the wiring for the chandelier. Ingenious in its design, the hand carving is very well done, especially the water and the figures. Early 20th century.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Recently rewired, no UL sticker. Minor age separations, old surface buildup. Recommended 40 watt max per bulb
