Large 17th Century Oak Chest from Spain or Southwest France

This large oak plank chest dates to the late 1600’s. It is typical of Spanish trunks/chests of this period, but we also see them in Southwest France during the same period. In 17th century Spain, chests of drawers were seldom used. These large trunks were the preferred method of storage in Spanish country homes, and they remain so, even to this day. Its versatility is in its geometric ornamentation. This trunk could go in a contemporary design, or in a traditional setting. There are rectangular and horizontal insets of stepped out moldings with diagonal motifs on the fronts of each. On the sides are two plain vertical stepped out panels. All this rests upon four block feet. The lock plate, hinges, and iron latch are original.  Versatile and very useful for extra storage, this beautiful chest will fit into many styles of decoration.

CONDITION: Very good condition with nicks and minor losses to wood. Molding to underside of top right not flush (see photos). Top has likely had some refinishing/re-working
