Small 17th Century and Later Walnut Wood Trunk from Northern Italy

This small walnut wood trunk from Italy is largely made with elements dating to the 1600s. The top, front and sides have plain panels outlined with moldings. The decorative motifs are triglyphs, scoops, gadrooned lobes and acanthus leaves. The feet are lion’s paws on the front and blocks at the back. It is typical of late Renaissance style furnishings coming out of North Italy in the 17th century. There is a steel escutcheon on the front panel surrounding a keyhole. When the top is opened, the upper portion of the peripheral moldings have geometric, incised motifs. This cabinetmaker was very thorough in his finish-out of this 17th Century piece. This trunk is an good in-between size and can be used as a decorative storage solution or as an end table anywhere in the home.
