Large Domed Antique Oak Trunk from Alsace, France, Circa 1780

This large French oak and iron trunk is typical of those coming from Alsace, France. It dates to the late 18th century and has impressive reticulated strapwork and motifs throughout.  On either side of the top cover are conforming iron ornamentation with gadrooned oval motifs. Just above the center pull, on the top of the trunk, are the initials A M C.  Each corner has been reinforced with iron plates which would have protected it during traveling. The handles on either side are attached to plain nailed iron straps in a cross formation.  The inside of the trunk is clean and in good condition. It has a covered wooden valuables box at the upper end.  This all rests on four flat feet.

Originally used a traveling trunk in the late 1700's, today, this large old French oak trunk will serve as a decorative storage solution in any home.

CONDITION: Good strong condition with some minor losses to ironwork. Normal wear to wood commensurate with age, such as minor splits, losses, etc.
