Early 18th Century Oak Regence Console with Rouge Marble Top

This is a very fine, period French Regence oak console with a rouge marble top.   The rectangular frieze has hand carved scrolling acanthus leaves extending to either side of a central circular motif.  This motif is reticulated into 8 larger circles and 4 smaller circles with a flower motif at the center. At the four corners of the reticulated circle are leaf motifs with the larger one at the bottom connecting into the scrolling acanthus leaves.  The sides have the same scrolling acanthus leaves with half shell motifs at the very back. The sinuous, two out-turned S-Scroll legs begin from two large acanthus leaves at the corners of the frieze in the shape of a C-Scroll. The carver has used a combination of acanthus leaf motifs, C and S scrolls, and tapered gadrooned lobes to add to the graceful form of the legs.  There is a small in-curved stretcher at the base with centerpiece having a repeat of the lily leaves used on the frieze’s circular centerpiece. The feet are small squared off beneath small scrolls of the leg.

The design of this console is very elegant, a particular attribute to the furniture in the Regence period. Examples of period Regence furnishings are rare.

CONDITION: Good antique condition commensurate with its age of early 1700’s, there are minor losses to motifs, scratches, abrasions to wood, age separations.
