Antique Forged Iron and Gilt Tole Console Table with Marble Top from Provence France, Circa 1850

*Vertical bars in front of console are temporary display supports due to back wall instability (not part of console table)

From France, this magnificent hand wrought iron, marble and gilt tole console table was made in Provence, circa 1850. The thick, shaped, green and white marble top has wonderful veining in the marble. The console portion has been made from hand forged iron and gilt tole.  Notice how the gilt tole motifs have hand indented details on all of the leaves and flower heads.  The iron console is in one piece, with three distinct sections, with the center portion being open and giving an airiness to the piece. Notice there is no modern type welding on this piece. Every connection is either pinned or forge welded.  The feet also have small wrought iron ball at the floor level.

Wrought iron furniture was first done in France in the beginning of the 18th century. There were really only two centers of production at this time: Paris and Provence. Surviving examples from this era are exceedingly rare mostly due to the technical complexity required to create them. Most pieces made in Paris were reserved for the Royal Court. In Provence artisinal ironsmithing was more exuberant and Baroque, influenced by the styles in nearby Italy. Provence forged iron manufacturing continued into the 19th century with beautiful, high quailty pieces. The console pictured below falls into this category. It was purchased in Paris in the early 1990's, and most recently came from an important Dallas Texas Estate.

This is a beautiful example of an antique Provencale wrought iron console table, and it will bring elegance anywhere it is placed.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Console table has holes along backside, under marble top for securing to wall. Vertical bars seen in these photos are not necessary, and only for added showroom safety. Some minor rubs to iron and tole. Small restoration can be seen underside of marble.
