Antique French Oak Console Table with Languedoc Rouge Marble Top, 1800s

This antique French marble topped console is in the Louis III style.  The European oak has always been natural in its color with a light sealer on it. The rouge Languedoc marble top is inset and surrounded by moldings of gadrooned lunettes, which are stepped out at the center and corners .  The apron has two faux drawers with fox head handles separated by foliate stepped out sections. The entire piece is on turned legs and ball feet with a turned stretcher and central finial. In the late 1600s, the red marble quarries of the Languedoc region were claimed as the Royal Quarries of the King, and therefore used extensively by Louis XIV throughout Versailles. The marble was also later used extensively in fireplace mantels and furniture in the 18th century. It is considered to be one of the best red marbles in the world.

CONDITION:  Old restorations, minor scratches, minor glaze variations. Fox head on right faux drawer handle replaced.
