19th Century 4-Drawer Marble Top French Bouillote Table

From France, this marble topped veneered parquet Bouillotte table dates to the 19th Century. The wooden veneer is a mixture of exotic woods in a geometric pattern. At the top and bottom of the parquet section are tiny, linear bead and reel motifs. The white inset marble top has light grey veining throughout. The ormolu gallery of linear X’s is over another linear motif of drapery and tassels. Ormolu mounts of female half figures are centered on the frieze over each leg.  Round ormolu circles of beads surrounding ormolu urns are the pulls for the four drawers. Centered beneath the pulls on curved pieces of exotic wood are ormolu draped acanthus leaf motifs.  The legs are tapered, rectangular veneered exotic wood on square ormolu sabots.

This table has a diameter of roughly 80 cm, which is close to the size of the original Bouillote game tables of the late Louis XVI period. Bouillote is a French card game which was was played on tables such as this. As the 19th century progressed, the term soon encompassed any table of this style, but diameters of the top usually dropped to 50-60 cm. The style is typical Neo-Classical, which was popular since the late Louis XVI period of the 1700's. This table dates to the middle 1800s.
