18th Century Louis XV Walnut Wood Commode, Lyon France

This Lyonnaise commode has been made from European Walnut Wood in the mid 1700s. Walnut was wood that was so valuable to the French that they prohibited its export from 1730 through the end of the reign of the Louis XV.  The wooden top and front have a restrained curve that harmonizes with the curves of the front legs and feet.  The three drawers have molded panels which exhibit varying grains of walnut wood .  The hand carved motifs at each end of the drawers are gadrooned acanthus leaves, scrolls and individual vines of small leaves. There are transverse rails between the drawers and the apron is shaped.  The sides have two indented panels and the corners are round with a plain panel.  The bronze fittings are not original to the piece but they are an extremely fine example of the Louis XV style.  They are stamped by the maker on the backs of the handles.  This commode has traces of a high sheen finish on its drawer fronts, but today, we use a good quality French wax over the entire piece. This beautiful and large commode has quite a bit of character and has all the attributes of a Lyonnaise piece, and will be an asset to any room.

CONDITION: Good overall antique condition. Old restorations in several areas.  Old wood worm damage, age separations, minor losses and nicks. Please inspect photos.
