Beautiful 18th Century Walnut Wood Commode from France with Original Hardware

This rare antique French Louis XV period commode "en arbalete" or crossbow profile has been hand made from prime French walnut wood. Commodes en arbalete are rare because they were extremely difficult to construct. Due to the preciseness of lining up the raised and indented ridges of the traverse rails with the drawers and carving this shape out of a thick piece of walnut wood, only the best cabinetmakers were commissioned.

The commode has its wonderful original bronze hardware depicting a running horse with foliate tails at either end of the drop handles. The keyhole escutcheon is a crown at the top with horses surrounding the key hole. There are acanthus leaf c-scrolls and a large stylized shell at the base.

In 1700s France, the commode was considered to be the prime piece of furniture in the chateau. It was often placed as a showpiece in the main room of the chateau.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition commensurate with early 1700’s.  Old restorations to drawers, minor rubs, nicks, surface scratches, age separations.
