18th Century French Walnut Commode Sauteuse

Top is 19th century

This is a meticulously hand carved, antique French commode sauteuse from the 1700’s. Sauteuse commodes were made with only two drawers, longer legs and cabriole feet. The top exhibits wonderful walnut wood burls over a conforming outline of stepped in and stepped out lines. This shape made the production more involved and therefore more expensive to produce. Also, the drawer frontages have beautiful carvings surrounding the highly chased, unusual bronze handles. This commode has many motifs from the Louis XV period, including some elegant motifs outlining both sides of the front legs and the bottom of the apron. The side panels have shaped tops and bottoms with aprons that have deeply shaped S-scrolls. The front feet are scrolled with shaped acanthus leaves, while the wide back feet are scrolls to the sides only.

From the 1700’s this antique French commode has fine details and coloration, and it is in a wonderful antique condition.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with some old restorations and minor losses. Some age separations/splits and traces of old woodworm. Top is likely 19th century.
