Antique Walnut Wood Buffet from Provence, France, 19th Century

From Provence, this French walnut wood buffet is from the 1800s. The abundant carvings, pierced apron and motifs are all typical of furnishings from the South of France during the 18th and 19th centuries. While typically French and Provencale, the style of the buffet pulls from both Louis XV and Louis XVI ornamentation.

On the front, there are two highly decorated doors with musical trophy motifs in the raised center panels. They are surrounded by a beautiful carved asymmetrical border of stylized gadrooned leaves, shells and acanthus leaves. The carved panels are surrounded with flowing vines of floral and foliate motifs, shells, and are in different patterns on both doors.

At the center of the upper frieze is a molded circle with a laurel leaf motif at its center, and between the doors, are fluted columns with chandelles or leaf bud motifs. The bottom is pierced with more laurel and acanthus leaves. There is an urn at the center with an arrangement. All this rests upon two scrolled front feet and a side scrolled back foot.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with old restorations, scratches, and some nicks to wood. Rubs to finish, traces of old woodworm.
