Richly Carved French Hunt Buffet "St. Hubert" in Blonde Oak, Circa 1890

This magnificent antique French St. Hubert 'Buffet de Chasse' or hunting vaisselier has beautifully hand carved motifs of animals of the hunt, fruit, nuts and foliage.  The hand carving has been done with meticulous detail by an expert ebeniste.   Buffets de Chasse were used as presentation pieces and could be found in French hunting lodges and manoirs. St Hubert is the patron saint of Hunters, and is the name typically given to this style of buffet.

The upper vessel area is slightly narrower than the bottom section. At the uppermost center, crowning the entire piece, is an excellent wooden sculpture of a large stag's head.  The stag is flanked by oak leaves, acorns, twigs, and clusters of fruit. Beneath, are two shelves for display purposes backed by decorated panels bearing cartouches and scrolling foliate motifs.  These shelves are held up by two sets of beautifully ornamented volutes supports, typical of the St. Hubert vaisseliers.

The lower section of the buffet is rounded and consists of 4 door and 4 drawers. All of the drawers open by oak leave pulls, and the two side drawers are quarter circles and pivot outward. Each of the doors is beautifully embellished with relief carved crinkled ribbons from which fruit and interlacing foliate motifs hang. The left center door features a large hare while the right center door features a game bird. The left door latches to a center shelf, and the right door has a working lock to keep everything closed. All this sits on 4 bun feet.

This hunt buffet with large stag carving is an exceptional example of this type of furniture from late 19th century France. The abundant carved decorations are deep and expertly executed, and of course, the perfect complement to these rich motifs, is the warm, honey colored blonde French oak. This color and patina is rarely seen on a piece like this.

Condition: Very good antique condition with minor wear and repairs. Key is not original. No key for upper drawers but lock present.
