Pair of Antique Tooled Leather and Oak Armchairs from Spain, 17th Century and Later

From Spain, these richly tooled leather and oak armchairs date to the 1600’s and later.  The leather is fastened to the frames with large brass nail heads, and the tooled leather is very elaborate and ornate in its designs. (See Photos) The big chair backs are arched at both the top and bottom.  The legs and stretchers are turned, with an elaborately carved and arched rising of interlaced scrolls at the front.  The front feet are known as ”Spanish Scrolls” (The Practical Book of Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese Furniture. Philadelphia & London J.B. Lippincott Company 1927), and the back feet are splayed.

These stunning tooled leather and oak armchairs are typical of chairs made in 16th and 17th century Spain.
