Beautiful Antique French Parcel Paint Settee with Musical Motifs

This very comfortable Louis XVI settee or canapé has been recently upholstered in muslin, ready for the upholstery of your choice. The richly carved frame dates to the early to mid 1800s. The style of the settee has the sides that are slightly curved around and inward, giving a comfortable, enveloping feeling to the person sitting at either end. This rests upon five legs. On the top center of the seat back, we see a mandolin, parchment music paper and roses. Overall, this piece has substantial, well executed carvings throughout it's wooden frame.

In the design of furniture, the Louis XVI period brought a return to antiquity, especially Grecian, which was synonymous with vertical and horizontal lines. Motifs softened any rigidity, but they never interfered with straight lines and symmetry. Wooden furniture and room paneling or boiseries, were often painted. Seating frames from chairs to settees were created by a maitre menuisier, a guild certified furniture maker and the carving was achieved by a maitre sculpteur ornemaniste, also certified as an ornamental sculptor. In the provinces, the Provincial craftsmen did all of the construction and carving. However, it conformed to the style of that particular province, as well as following the current trends in Paris.

The motifs are in the Louis XVI style and are a complement to the XVI style table we have featured on our website. This wonderful antique French settee or canapé will be an asset to any home.
