A Unique Caned Regence Style Walnut Wood Canape from France, Circa 1870

In France, caning began in the Regence Period (1708-1713) and was completely done by hand.  This 19th C. Canapé or Settee, in the Regence Style, is representative of single and double caning. The sides have double caning and the back has single caning. The shape of the canapé allows the viewer to see the oval shapes which are partially on the side and front.  The hand carved walnut wood motifs on this piece are absolutely done to perfection, from its tiny vines to its bold shells.  Its soft outlines are serpentine in shape, inviting anyone to stop and have a seat.  Caned canapés during this period were constructed to seat three and, in the winter cushions or material would be placed over the caning to block any draft that might come through.  There are a total of ten legs with scrolled feet. This wonderful 19th Century French Canape will be an asset to any room.

CONDITION: Old restorations to one foot; minor nicks and rubs, minor restoration to small area of caning on back, nailhead holes barely visible on front stretcher where upholstery once was attached.

Back Height=37, L=71, D=30 3/8, Seat Height=15 (with cushion)
