Antique Carved French Church Pew, Circa 1750

This is a beautifully hand carved antique French church seat from the 1700’s. The first use would have been part of a row of several seats linked to each other and placed along the wall. The seat can be raised up for standing or down for support (called a mercy). The second use would have been for a bishop in a cathedral or an abbot in an abbey. The inside top of the seat is a semi-circle so that it contours a persons back. The detailed hand carving under the armrest depicts angels’ heads with their wings crossed in front. Classical motifs are beneath the wings. The fluted, volute shaped legs end in scrolls on a shaped platform which goes around the entire chair. On the inside and outside of the volute legs, there is more hand carved classical ornamentation. For now, we have decided to leave it in it's beautiful old condition with no wax or restoration to it's minor losses.

CONDITION: Good Antique Condition; minor losses to motifs, (see photos) nicks and rubs to wood..
