Pair of 17th Century French Walnut and Saint-Cyr Tapestry Armchairs

From France, this stunning pair of walnut wood and tapestry armchairs date to the late 1600’s. The figurative tapestry panels on the inside back of each chair are a mix of gros and petit point tapestry of Saint-Cyr. Saint-Cyr techniques were perfectly suited to covering chairs due to it's durability. These colorful scenes are typical of 17th century Saint-Cry. There are musicians, dancers, exotic trees, and many shades of reds, blues, greens, ochre, black, etc. The seats and backs of the chairs have new velvet upholstery and new gimp. The carved walnut wood frames are beautifully constructed with what we believe are panthers’ heads at the end of each arm. The legs are baluster in shape as are the stretchers. The top backs are a straight line in their shape. This pair of French walnut and tapestry armchairs will be the highlight of any area.

CONDITION: Good overall antique condition with old abrasions to wood in areas, scratches, traces of old woodworm. Tapestry panels have some losses and minor holes. Blue velvet seat upholstery and backings along with gimp, added recently.
