Double Chapeau de Gendarme Antique Armoire from Rennes

This antique double Chapeau de Gendarme armoire made of cherry wood (and secondary woods) from the area around Rennes, Brittany, France. It has hand carved decorative motifs and it is inscribed with it's created date: L A N 1822 (the year 1822) on the center front dormant attached to the door. This exceptional French Double Chapeau de Gendarme or “double hat” armoire has incredibly detailed yet simplistic hand carving. The carving is done in light relief and incising, giving an overall impression of straight lined simplicity. The “double hat” has been incised with depictions of stylized leaves and flowers. Stylized shells and scrolling vines ending in flowers are on the raised panels. The four, indented, shaped, front panels of the doors have been laid at angles to each other and outlined with raised molding and beading. The side panels are all plain. All this rests upon shaped front feet and block back feet.

The country cabinetmakers in and around Rennes often signed and dated their furniture. There is no other region in France where incising on the furniture is so pervasive. There are two geographical styles—the Lower Breton and the Upper Breton. In Lower Brittany the furniture lines are straight and more robust. In Upper Brittany, a closer neighbor to Normandy and the Loire, the styles are more elegant and contoured. So, the Breton armoire is either very simple in its decoration or decorated vividly with allegorical scenes or motifs. Some of the finest armoires were made in and around Rennes, with ornamentation being delightfully whimsical.
