Magnificent Pair of French 18th Century Regence Bibliotheques

These imposing, tall, and narrow 18th C. Regence Bibliotheques came from a boiserie (wooden paneled room) in France. The entire room would have had similar motifs throughout and would have been the same height. The bibliotheques would fit seamlessly into the rest of the room, from the crown molding down to the baseboard molding. These have been stripped at some point in their history, and the family who commissioned the room must have had musical interests, as the 'inner' sides of these bibliotheques have beautiful hand carved musical trophies. On each of the trophies, we see delicate hand carved writing in French. On of the trophies reads: "Poesie ta voie air enchanteur, Merveille aurore dans mon coeur". The other musical sheet reads: "Nymphie jolie chante encore cette melodie"...

The curved arched front of each of these bibliotheques is the same except for the frieze patterned ground on each. One has a diagonal patterned ground with florets while the other has a diagonal patterned ground with fleur-de-lys. Both have a central pedestal urn with grapevines trailing off to either side. The outer sides of the bibliotheques share circular acanthus leaf motifs. Each piece has three shelves in the upper section, and one shelf in the lower portion. Cabinet doors have chicken wire frontages. These 18th C. French boiserie bibliotheques will be a fabulous addition to any room.

CONDITION: Good antique condition: Back and inner sides most likely replaced at some point in their history .Wear to relief of motifs, rubs, nicks, age separations, minor losses, and scratches to edges of pieces where removed from boiserie.
