Louis XIII Style Diamond Point Homme Debout Cabinet from France

From France, this large and handsome French cabinet is known as an"Homme Debout". An homme debout is a piece of furniture half the size of a normal armoire. It has an upper and lower cabinet with a drawer in between the top and bottom cabinets and it was used for storing clothing and household goods. Homme Debout translates to standing man and was the name given to this type of furniture after the French Revolution.  Legend has it, that it was used as a hiding place for armed Royalist insurgents during the Revolution. The middle drawer’s internal boards were removed allowing a man to stand up in the piece and hide!

This homme debout is composed of antique elements as well as more recent replaced boards. The large diamond point motifs are typical of the Louis XIII style which began in the early 1600s in France. It comes 2 keys, one for each door, and the entire piece sits on large bun feet on the front and block feet on the back. This style of furniture is more geometric and simple than periods that followed, which allow it to be placed in a variety of interiors. It comes apart for easier transport (top, bottom, crown, drawer), and it is constructed of walnut and pine.

CONDITION:  Good strong condition with some traces of old wood worm, and replaced sections including crown, base molding, internal boards.
