Early 1900's Painted French Buffet Deux Corps

This unusual black and gold painted antique French deux corps dates to the early 20th century.  Buffet "a deux corps", or literally, a buffet with two bodies, had a narrower top to a wider and deeper bottom. The overall shape of this piece is in the style of French furniture originally made in the early to mid 1700's. The rich black and gold colors were extremely popular during certain periods of French furniture, such as the Chinoiserie pieces of the Louis XV era. Black lacquers were highlighted with gilt bronze ornaments and hardware.

The upper section of this cabinet is fitted with shelves and two glass doors.  The bottom portion is wider and deeper with the same moldings, but wooden panels instead of glass.  Motifs of linear darts are at the interior of the gilded moldings on the front panels.  The sides of the top piece have two panels each while the lower piece has one panel.  Fluted and gilded columns adorn the sides of the cabinet. The apron is shaped with gold highlights.

Perfect for displaying anything from objets d’art to books, this black and gold French deux corps can be used in a variety of places in the home.

CONDITION: Good strong condition with abrasions, scratches, and nicks to wood / paint as seen in photos.
