This absolutely stunning and versatile boiseries door surround is from the French Regence period. Made from European Oak, this would have been a part of a boiseries (wooden paneled room) that had a wide entrance somewhere into the room.
Today, in addition to its original purpose, this piece can be used for a variety of other purposes. It could be used as a headboard for a bed with the central portion having drapes. Above the bed could be paintings, a tapestry or accessories of your choice. It could also be a large window surround or a bibliotheque against a wall—just make it deeper and add shelves. Another IDEA is to place it at the end of a hall with a trompe l'oeil painting representing a scene of your choice.
During the Regence period, elegance and refinement became important in design both architecturally as well as in furniture design. Asymmetry began to appear in motifs and ornamentation but still retained symmetry in composition. This door surround has motifs of the period which have been beautifully represented in finely hand-carved detail. At the top center are hand-carved motifs of love birds within a floral and foliate scrolled cartouche. To either side are scrolling floral vines within c-scrolled and shaped panels. The shaped bottom molding has a gadrooned leaf motif . The asymmetrical side panels feature shells, intricately carved floral and foliate ornamentation at the top, center and bottom of the panels.
This is a large and extremely versatile architectural antique from France and will make quite a statement in any location it's placed.
CONDITION: Good condition. Previous restorations, age separations, rubs, nicks and scratches. Small sections to upper side corners missing (see photos). These would have been part of the other paneling..
