Antique Polychrome Tabernacle Facade, Spain, 1700s

This stunning polychrome Tabernacle door in the form of a cartouche is from Spain. It has deeply hand carved motifs, and on the door at the center, is the Paschal Lamb or Passover Lamb. Rays of sun going to the heavens symbolizing Christ’s ascension into heaven are above the lamb.  There is a cross with a flag attached to it symbolizing Christ’s victory over death in his Resurrection.

The surrounding motifs of the escutcheon are large C and S scrolls, gadrooned leaves, stylized scoop leaf motifs and fruit.  Fringed topped leaves are at the top center, and there is a detailed brass Crown cartouche keyhole. This 18th Century tabernacle façade from Spain can be used as a piece of artwork anywhere.

CONDITION: Good condition. Losses to paint with distressed paint on leaves. Minor age separations and nicks to wood all commensurate with age of 1700’s. No key.
