Magnificent 17th Century Monastery Door from Spain

Originally from Seville, this rare door’s geometric ornamentation exhibits the Moorish influence. The Moors’ prohibited the use of the human figure in architectural decorations, so in their desire to attain beauty of ornament, they chose mostly geometric and floral designs. Iron embellishments, a forte of theirs, were often added as an additional type of decoration. This influence trickled into Spanish design for centuries. This Monastery door was originally comprised of two pieces: the demilune overdoor and the rectangular body of the door. The two were joined in a recent strengthening and restoration. Numerous examples of framed geometric shapes with hundreds of iron nail heads prevail throughout the design of the front of the door. An iron door knocker centers the door while horizontal back boards support the geometric designs. The back of the door has vertical boards with two original horizontal iron straps. Two large horizontal boards have been added for support.

The demilune overdoor has stylized radius boards emanating from another demilune shape with an inverted heart cutout. The inverted heart symbol can be researched back to medieval time, but to have an inverted heart on an entry way is not uncommon. How visitors are greeted is critical in the development of a relationship and whether this person will be friend or treated as suspicious person. So door knockers, bells and even cutouts in the shape of a heart such as on this door, were added as a good way to greet visitors. And it is said that if the heart is upside down, it is of no importance. Strong feelings are not concerned with the "cardinal points".

Monastery doors of this age are very rare on the market. This door could be used in numerous ways within the home or simply hung on a wall as art.
