Antique Carved Oak Fireplace Surround from Belgium, 19th Century
This intricately hand carved oak mantel surround was once in a convent in the area of Antwerp Belgium.  The long lintel is full of foliate rinceau motifs which flank a central figural cartouche helf up by two faun cherubs. All of this is held up by beautiful grape leaf columns with Corinthian capitals. The uppermost projection of this mantel has a series of carved modillions above another series of linear cubes.  Birds are at either end of this section.  A double, stepped-out section with 4 different Rennaisance style faces is at both ends and sides of the lintel. Fluted pilasters with acanthus leaf capitals connect to the wall and can support the lintel.

This fabulous and highly detailed antique oak mantel surround will be the focal point of any room it is placed in.

CONDITION:  Good antique condition with old surface build-up, minor losses to tips of some motifs, wood abrasions splits and age separations, as seen in photos below.
