Small Pair of Antique Marble and Gilt Bronze Cassolettes from France, 19th Century

This beautiful pair of cassolettes from France has nicely chased gilt bronze over antique variegated green marble. They date to the 1800s. Originally, cassolettes were used to disperse perfume into the air by means of burning it. Now the term is used more generally and can include solid marble vases of a certain shape and perfumed substance or potpourri holders, such as these. The motifs are neoclassical with the gilt bronze basin having a surround of gadrooned lobes or sometimes referred to in French as a bate. Garlands of flowers are draped between mascarons with curving horns. Three curved legs having acanthus leaves above graceful double cloven hooves support the basin. Water leaves are surrounding the bottoms of the cassolettes. A marble tripod base with round bronze feet support the entire piece.

Today, these can be used as wonderful accessories anywhere, and they are often to converted to lamps.

CONDITION:  Minor losses to gilding on bronze motifs. Small variations to marble‚Äôs finish.
