Late 19th Century Nevers Urn from France

This wonderful antique French urn is from Nevers, France, and dates to the late 1800’s. The ground color is a deep navy blue with motifs throughout in yellows, golds, blues, tans, and oranges.  There are cartouches on either side having different scenes of a man and a woman courting each other.  On both ends, there are smiling faces with two scrolling handles extending to the top of the rim. There is a linear, navy blue scrolling vine on the upper interior rim, and the jardinière is marked on the inside bottom. All this rests upon four scrolled feet.

Nevers, France was a French manufacturing center for producing faience or tin-glazed earthenware. The first Nevers factory began around 1588 and was operated by an Italian family. The name faience was probably derived from an Italian center, Faenza, which produced outstanding majolica from the Renaissance forward.

CONDITION: Very good condition with only minor imperfections.
