A Large Carved Antique Italian Alabaster Bust of Menelaus, King of Sparta

Early 1900s

From Italy, this absolutely stunning alabaster bust of Menelaus, King of Sparta, and husband of Helen, has been sculpted out of alabaster. It sits on a short black stone pedestal base. The abduction of Menelaus’ wife, Helen, led to the Trojan War. During the war he served under his elder brother, Agamemnon, who was the commander in chief of the Greek Forces.

Menelaus’ expression given by the sculptor shows a furrowed brow on his forehead with an appearance of overall exhaustion on his face.  The antique, aged condition of the alabaster adds to the impression of antiquity. This large bust will be the focal point of any area it is placed in.

CONDITION: Good strong condition with cracks, abrasions, and chips throughout.
