An Early 1700s Carved Limewood Statue from France

This magnificent limewood carving is likely of a Cormorant with her hatchlings on a shaped pedestal. There is a lamb in front of them reclining on a higher pedestal with c-scroll acanthus leaves at the front. The lower pedestal has fluted motifs around the front and sides and rests upon another double molding which surrounds the entire piece.  The carver of this piece was a master at his craft, with proportion and finite detail being paramount. This beautifully carved statue will accentuate any area it is placed upon.

CONDITION:  Very good antique condition for its age being in the early 1700s. There are losses to some of the motifs. There is a missing motif on the lamb’s head and a missing motif on the back of the Cormorant. Old areas of paint on bottom moldings.
