Pair of Lefront Gros Relief Barbotine Vases from France, Late 19th Century

This exquisite pair of antique French Barbotine vases were done by Theodore Lefront.  There is a variety of large and low relief flowers and leaves on a ground of brown fading to ochre. The vases are marked on the bottom.

Barbotine is the French version of Majolica. It is a fine ceramic, made from clay which can be worked to an incredibly realistic form.  The flowers look fresh and natural.  Theodore Lefront began working with faience and porcelain in an atelier in Fontainebleu in 1860. He had several apprenticeships with various other porcelain ateliers until opening his own in 1872. Numerous exposition medals were awarded Lefront between 1866 and 1884 for his pieces.

CONDITION:  Very good antique condition with previous restorations; very minor rubs to edges of some flowers and leaves.
