19th Century French Bronze and Crystal Inkwell with Animal Motifs

This multi-faceted antique crystal inkwell on gilt bronze platter is highly decorated with animals and birds throughout.   The top flips open and is crowned with a deer. It opens to a gilt lined rim on a beautiful geometric crystal inkwell.  This sets into a round gilt rim on the platter. The gold platter has four silver finished insets, all depicting different animalier scenes in relief. These include: a bouquet of pheasants in the reeds; a stag and doe in the woods; leaping hares; and 3 mallard ducks. They are all surrounded by intricate motifs of a cherub’s face at the top, surrounded by various C and S scroll acanthus leaves, with a scrolled palmette at the bottom center. The inkwell rests upon four inward scrolling lily motifs with stylized animal heads facing each other. This type of inkwell was part of the "animalier" movement and would have been made for the French bourgeoisie of the 1800's. Today, it will serve as an elegant accessory in any library or study.
