Exceptionally Well Carved Late 19th Century Wooden Wading Bird

This very finely hand carved bird dates to the late 19th Century. Each individual feather is meticulously carved with lifelike realism. The carving is of European origin, likely Swiss, and in the style of Black Forest. Most Black Forest animal subjects were bears, birds, wolves, and sometimes dogs and cattle. One could say this bird is a type of heron or egret. The bird stands upon a mound with rocks and various foliate motifs. He is leaning into a broken tree trunk, and there are carved initials of the sculptor on the rocks "E M". Truly a very life like study of a heron or egret, this sculpture will be a focal point anywhere it is placed.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with chips to base with an age separation running across base. Minor losses to leaf tips and a restoration to feather.
