Circa 1860 French Empire Style Marble and Bronze Inkwell with Letter Opener

From France, this elegant marble and gilt bronze inkwell and letter opener has been done in the Empire style and dates to circa 1860. The focal point of this inkwell is clearly the eagle at the center. The eagle is one of the main symbols of the empire, originally used by Imperial Rome. The marble slab is also flanked by winged lions, with another placed on top of the letter opener. To either side of the eagle are two covered gilt bronze inkwells with small round glass bowls inside. Their ornamentation is pinecones, stiff leaves, linear moldings, and three legs with paw feet on a round bronze decorated disc.  The green marble with white veins is in a rectangle with a slight stepped out frontage. On this stepped out marble is gilt bronze ornamentation at the front.  There is an elongated oval indention at the front for the opener or pens.

This elegant green and gold French Empire inkwell will be perfect as a desk accessory. It is rare to find antique inkwells of this type with their original letter opener.

CONDITION: Good condition with slight losses to gilding on bronze throughout; Old surface buildup to areas of gilt bronze, some tarnish to interior of inkwells.
