Antique French Neoclassical Gilt Bronze Table Casket, Late 19th Century

From France, this stunning Neoclassical gilt bronze table casket dates to circa 1870. All four sides as well as the top, are finely chased gilt bronze. They represent classic mythological scenes of a mostly celebratory nature.   The top of the box shows Diana The Huntress with her nymphs. Diana is the one seated on a rock, just left of center, with her arm around her hunting dog and a half moon over her head. This particular depiction of Diana can also be seen in a famous Sevres vase and plaque C. 1790, which is on display in the Museum of Prado, Spain and Musee du Louvre, Paris.

The rest of the box has peripheral linear moldings of beads around the panels as well as the base, and the interior has a hinged top with red velvet lining. All of the scenes were done in expertly crafted bas relief fashion. They are quite intricate and a joy to inspect. This rich, gilt bronze table box will serve as an elegant decorative accessory anywhere in the home.

CONDITION:  Good antique condition with very minor wear. Slight bending to linear moldings in areas. No key, feet have been removed at some point in its history.
