Antique Majolica Apothecary Jar from Italy, 19th Century

“Chevrette”


This colorful antique majolica Apothecary container was used to store pharmaceutical liquids. Containers such as this have been used since the 16th century. This particular model is from Italy, made in the 1800's. It is hand painted with wonderful solid field floral and foliate motifs in greens and oranges against a yellow ground color. The blue spout is supported by an acanthus leaf, and the handle has acanthus leaves supporting it on either side of the jar. The top rim and base has the same color as the spout.  It is marked on the bottom.

CONDITION:  Good overall condition with minor chips to the upper rim, bottom rim and spout.

H=10 1/8, W=6 1/2, D=7 3/4
