Magnificent Pair of Antique Carved Pine Angels on Iron Bases, Circa 1710

These rare hand carved pine angels date to circa 1710. Their contemporary metal bases have been custom shaped to fit the bases of each statue. One of the statues is praying as noted by her hands clasped at her heart, while the other is gazing down and towards her left hand. They are both kneeling, one on one knee and the other on both knees. The carving of the statues is meticulous, and their scale is in true proportion.

Originally, these were painted and/or gilded. At the back of the statues, we can see how they were carved and hollowed out of massive pieces of pine. Each statue has a myriad of old hand forged iron hardware, such as pins, plates, and loops on their upper backs. Some of this hardware held the angels wings, which have not survived or were removed. The origin is Western European, either Italy or possibly Germany, where they created masterful carved altars and religious statues starting in the late 16th century. At over 93 inches high (nearly 8 feet), these fantastic pieces of art, on their impressive iron bases will make quite a statement anywhere they are placed.

CONDITION:  Beautiful antique condition with old restorations, wings missing on both statues, age separations, cracks, and scratches, traces of old gesso.
